Testing: What a Good Water Filter Can Really Remove

Testing: What a Good Water Filter Can Really Remove

At first glance, tap water may look perfectly clean. Yet it can still contain invisible substances that affect its taste, smell, and quality. That’s where the water filter jug comes in – a subtle helper that turns ordinary tap water into water that’s truly pure.

We decided to test what a high-quality filter can actually remove — and how filtration impacts your daily drinking and cooking.

What’s Commonly Found in Tap Water

Even though public tap water is safe to drink, it often contains substances that reduce its overall quality.

 The most common are:

  • Chlorine – used for disinfection but alters taste and smell,
  • Heavy metals – traces of copper, lead, or zinc from plumbing,
  • Limescale – minerals that leave deposits in kettles and appliances,
  • Micro-particles – dust, sand, or rust residues.

While these aren’t necessarily dangerous, they can still affect water quality and the taste of beverages made with it over time.

How Multi-Layer Filtration Works

Lauben uses a multi-stage filtration system combining mechanical, ion exchange, and activated carbon filters.

  • The mechanical layer traps dirt, rust, and micro-particles.
  • Activated carbon absorbs chlorine and organic compounds that cause odour and aftertaste.
  • The ion exchange process reduces water hardness and prevents limescale buildup.

The result is cleaner, softer, and better-tasting water – ideal for drinking, coffee, tea, and cooking.

Our Internal Quality Tests

To verify the filters’ effectiveness, we used water test strips to measure hardness and chlorine levels.

The results? After filtration:

  • chlorine content dropped by over 90%,
  • water hardness decreased by half,
  • taste and smell improved dramatically.

When preparing coffee and tea, the difference was immediate – cleaner aroma, fuller flavour, and no chlorine scent.

Why Filter Quality Matters

  • Not all filters remove the same substances.
  • The key factors are filter media quality, certification, and jug design.
  • Lauben filters are built for high efficiency and long-term consistency, filtering up to 150 litres of water without performance loss.

A quality water filter makes an instant difference – for your taste buds, your health, and even your household appliances.
