Swicy: what's the trend and how to make it at home

Sweet and spicy at the same time. It sounds bold, but once you try it, you'll understand why the swicy trend has the whole food world talking.

If you've been scrolling through social media or visiting good restaurants lately, you've probably come across terms like "hot honey", "honey with chilli" or "swicy". This isn't a passing fad. Swicy is currently thebiggest flavour trend around and home cooks everywhere are getting on board, including in Czech kitchens.

What does swicy actually mean?

Swicy is a mashup of the words sweet and spicy. The principle is simple: the sweetness hits first, then the chilli warmth follows and gives the whole dish an extra kick. The result is a balanced flavour that just works.

The sweet and spicy combination is nothing new, of course. Thai sweet chilli sauce, Korean gochujang or Mexican dishes with chilli and fruit have been around for decades. What's new is that this principlehas made its way into everyday home cooking. People started adding honey and chilli to things you'd never have expected, like pizza, grilled vegetables, aged cheese or seafood.

In 2026, the trend is going even further. Honey is being paired with smoky chipotle, tropical fruit with habanero, or maple syrup with cayenne pepper. But to get started, the basic combination is more thanenough and anyone can pull it off.

The basic swicy glaze: how to get the honey and chilli balance right

This is a recipe you'll come back to again and again. It works brilliantly on chicken, pork ribs, prawns, halloumi and roasted vegetables. The prep takes barely two minutes and you can easily adjust the heatlevel to suit yourself.

Ingredients (base for 2 to 3 servings):

  • 3 tbsp good quality runny honey

  • 1 tbsp olive oil

  • 1 tbsp soy sauce

  • 1 tsp chilli flakes (or finely chopped fresh chilli)

  • 1 clove of garlic (crushed)

  • juice of half a lime

  • a pinch of salt

Method:

  1. Mix together the olive oil, soy sauce, garlic, lime juice, salt and chilli in a bowl. Use this as the marinade for your meat or vegetables.

  1. Leave to rest for at least 20 minutes, ideally an hour or overnight in the fridge.

  1. Keep the honey separate and stir it together with a little of the reserved marinade. Use this sweet glaze only at the very end of cookinghoney added too early will burn and turn bitter at hightemperatures.

How do you adjust the heat? The mild version uses just half a teaspoon of chilli flakes and an extra tablespoon of honey, giving a pleasant sweetness with a gentle warm finish. The middle ground keeps to therecipe as written, or swaps the dried flakes for fresh chilli or a teaspoon of sriracha. For the brave, half a teaspoon of smoked paprika or a few drops of Tabasco will give a sharper kick, though the honey keepsit from going too far.

Swicy on a contact grill

A contact grill is ideal for swicy recipes. The high heat caramelises the honey glaze in the final stage, creating a glossy crust on the outside while keeping the inside perfectly juicy.

Boneless chicken thighs are naturally more flavourful than breast and take on the marinade beautifully. Cook on the Poultry programme or at 200 °C for 10 to 12 minutes and brush on the honey glaze only in the last minute. Halloumi with a sweet and spicy honey glaze is a combination that surprises even the most sceptical guests. Grill at 200 °C for around 4 minutes and drizzle the warm swicy sauce over it just before serving.

The Lauben Contact Grill Deluxe 2000ST is perfectly suited to summer grilling with a swicy glaze. The 2000 W output means it heats up fast and caramelises the glaze at exactly the right moment. In BBQ mode, it opens out flat and gives you a large grilling surface on the terrace or balcony, without charcoal and without smoke.

Swicy in an air fryer

If you don't feel like watching a grill on hot summer days, an air fryer is a great alternative. The hot air caramelises just as reliably and needs very little attention from you.

Honey and chilli prawns are ready in 8 minutes. Spread them in the basket in a single layer, set the Shrimp programme or 190 °C for 8 minutes and toss them in the swicy glaze right after taking them out of thebasket. Crispy wings are a classic that works perfectly with a honey and chilli glaze. For the last 3 minutes of cooking, take the wings out, brush them with the honey mixture and put them back in. The resultwill be glossy and crispy at the same time.

Swicy as a no-cook dressing

You don't have to heat the mixture at all. It works just as well served cold as a dressing for grilled courgette, aubergine or peppers, as a spicy dip for warm naan bread or tortillas, or as a sauce for rice bowlswith fresh vegetables. Just whisk the ingredients together in a bowl and you have a dressing that takes any dish in a completely new direction.

Why does it work?

Capsaicin from chilli peppers stimulates the release of endorphins, the body's feel-good chemicals. The sweetness of honey anchors this effect, softens any sharpness and adds depth to the flavour. Honeyand chilli simply belong together.

You don't have to be a fan of spicy food to get into swicy. Just start with the milder version and work your way up to find what suits you best.
